Pygmy Filefish

Pygmy Filefish - Cozumel, Mexico, 2007

The 2 inch pygmy was very well camouflaged in the soft coral. Filefish and triggerfish (see Grouper and Clown Triggerfish) have a bony extension which normally sits flat along the back just behind the head. When threatened the file or trigger lifts up so that the fish can wedge itself in a hole in the reef and hopefully not be pulled out by a predator.
